This past week SXSW 2013 in Austin, Texas ended its duration of its 10 days of claim to fame festivals and conferences in Film, Interactive, and Music. SXSW Music offers artist-provided music and video samples of featured artists at each festival via their official You Tube channel. SXSW Film focuses on new directing talent. SXSW Interactive focuses on emerging technology, a focus which has earned the festival a reputation as a breeding ground for new ideas and creative technologies. I’ve never been to SXSW and hopefully in the future I’ll have the opportunity to check it out because it does look like an on-going event that would be a shame to miss! I’ll recap what’s been happenin’ in the Big Western State because last I heard JT continued his 20/20 Experience from the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon stage all the way to Texas to give the SXSW fans a blow away of the mind like we did in New York. Let’s dive in to some random selections across the board starting with Let's Buy Happiness "Fast Fast".
Definitely an “Easy” listen. This group consists of four guys and one girl who is the lead singer from listening. Her voice reminds me of a vocal-style that I’ve heard many times before within the past few years. Actually the best example for me to give is Blake Shelton’s selected apprentice “understudy” Xenia from 2011 the first season of the “The Voice”. She’s not the only one to sing in this fashion which makes this a trendy form of vocalizing. The drums in the beginning give a tribal, earthy energy and as it continues an additional male voice combines with hers as the energy picks up. The repeated line “We will be fine, but I get into it” is melodic and sticks in the memory. The landscape reminds me of the Irish country-side, not sure if this past holiday, St. Patrick’s Day, has something to do with it but the rolling green hills reminds me of it. The moments of focus on each individual member will feel like you’re meeting them for the first time one-on-one. I can only go by ear to understand what is possible, but when the accompanying music in the background gradually reaches a unified mix it’s difficult. I Love accents but the young lady’s British accent added with it makes it even more challenging. The song is good to listen to without sounding too overdone or menacing with the electric guitar in the background towards the end as well. Let’s Buy Happiness is a British alternative rock music group. The lead female vocalist is Sarah Hall and the other members are James Hall (guitar/keys), Graeme Martin (guitars), Mark Brown (bass) and James King (drums). Their first EP No Hot Ashes was self-released and received national success. Other acts they have played with are Florence and the Machine, Foals, The xx, and Mumford and Sons most notably at the 2010 Glastonbury Festival in Pilton, Somerset, England.
