For the second year, in the English-speaking Caribbean, over 35 exhibitors of paintings, sculpture, photography, drawings, original limited edition prints and new media exploring the cultural traditions of the Caribbean will be exhibited at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, located at Two Mile Hill, Barbados, West Indies. The Caribbean Fine Art (“CaFA”) Fair opens Wednesday, March 7, 2012 with a Gala Reception featuring David Boothman & Friends and the presentation of the Caribbean Luminary of the Arts Award, and runs through Sunday, March 11, 2012.

A special feature of CaFA Fair Barbados 2012 will be performances and film screenings scheduled for each day of the event. Visual art from both David Boothman and film director Billy Gerard Frank will also be on exhibit. Screenings by filmmakers from Guadeloupe, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago are in the works.

On Saturday, March 10th, there will be a special screening of Absence of Love, a short film by Grenadian artist/director Billy Gerard Frank, which will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival and several other upcoming international film festivals. Also on Saturday is the second edition of our Caribbean Art Symposium, bringing together art academics and practitioners from the Caribbean, Latin America, and the U.S. to explore subjects that are vital to the growth of Caribbean art as an industry. Three seminars are scheduled to examine the following issues:

  • Caribbean Art: Exploring our relationship with Latin America. Panelists will examine the growth of Latin American art; the correlation with increased interest and scholarship in Caribbean art; and the avenues for increased recognition of Caribbean art within our region and beyond.

  • Caribbean Art in Regional Collections: Public & Private. Panelists will discuss and present highlights from Caribbean and Regional art collections, both public and private, which feature the works of Caribbean artists.

  • Developing the Region’s Cultural Industries: Focus on the Visual Arts. Panelists will discuss the uneven development of the visual arts across the region as an industry and the steps needed to convert this sector into a substantial contributor to economic growth.

Confirmed panelists include Hartley Alleyne, Barbados; Dr. Basil Springer, Barbados; Allison Thompson, Barbados; Carl E. Hazlewood, Guyana; Tatiana Flores, USA; and representatives from Universidad Nacional Experimental De Las Artes, Venezuela.

The impressive selection of art representing over 12 Caribbean countries includes works by internationally recognized contemporary artists such as Ras Ishi Butcher, Barbados; Bill Grace, Barbados; Ras Akyem I Ramsay, Barbados; Alicia De La Campa, Cuba; Dudley Charles, Guyana; Terry Boddie, Nevis; Carlos Santiago, Puerto Rico; Glen Martin, Trinidad & Tobago; and Ademola Olugebefola, U.S. Virgin Islands.
