Donald Trump captured the white vote primarily by embracing racism. However, this racism is nothing but a red herring to distract his followers from the fact that Republicans have nothing to offer the American people, with the exception of tax breaks for the billionaires. As I have asked before, “Will racism put food on the table?”  Will racism help to pay your outrageous hospital bill? The sad fact is that the Republicans reward their white support with exploitation.

When is the last time Republicans have proposed legislation for the benefit of ordinary Americans?  Even worse, when Democrats propose legislation for the benefit of ordinary Americans, Republicans oppose it with lies, phony arguments, distortions and every dishonest means they can muster.

Let us not forget that as America was battered by COVID, proud hard-working Americans rendered jobless and forced to stand for hours in food-lines, the Republicans tried their darndest to deny them an adequate stimulus payment

Case in point – the Build back Better Bill. This bill is a needed bonanza for the harried American consumer. Relief at last! This bill proposes but Republicans oppose:

  • Expanded pre-K, which would give all kids, no matter their race or financial status, the best start to their education.
  • Medicaid coverage of dental, vision, and hearing—filling a critical gap that disproportionately impacts low-income communities.
  • Free community college—which would give millions of students in underserved communities the chance to access higher education and find good-paying jobs for their futures.
  • Lowered drug costs by allowing Medicare to negotiate lower prices—a change that could finally stop greedy drug companies from price gouging consumers on lifesaving medications like insulin.
  • Paid family leave for new parents and those caring for sick relatives—a program which would finally end the United States' shameful position as one of only three nations not to provide such a service.
  • Child tax credits—a transformative policy that would immediately lift millions of children in the United States out of poverty.
  • Increased clean energy to solve the climate crisis—a critical step toward tackling the existential crisis of our lifetime.

See what I mean? Racism will not put food on the table but will also remove it from mouths.
