There is a new revolution in Africa. It is not a political revolution. It is an economic revelation. It is led by President Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso. Many African countries, rich in minerals and other natural resources, sell these resources to rich foreign corporations very cheaply. These corporations make millions developing these resources abroad. Not only do they make millions but theyd create good jobs manufacturing these products, while the source African countries languish in poverty. But, no longer in Burkina Faso. President Traore has stopped that by requiring all such products to be developed in their home country, Burkina Faso.
This could eliminate poverty in Burkina Faso. Other African countries have recognized the importance of this. For example, Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has urged African countries to use their natural resources to strengthen their global economic position and reduce foreign dependence. She called for a shift from exporting raw materials toward building local processing industries and stronger self-reliance
President Traore has instituted change making products made abroad to be made locally, thus stimulating employment with good jobs. Burkina Faso has begun producing and locally adapting its own βNangaβ armoured vehicles, with the first units already delivered to the countryβs defence and security forces. Traore maintains that African nations must turn political sovereignty into economic and industrial sovereignty.
I am sure these policies will be an inspiration to leaders of not just Africa, but also other developing countries. In my book, βA Jamaica Poor No Moreβ, I also advocate for many products imported, to be produced in Jamaica by the Jamaican government. Let us hope Traoreβs influence spreads and America does not kill or kidnap him.
