A recent presentation by noted physicist and musician, Dr Stephon Alexander at UMass Dartmouth included a performance by The ZYG 808.

Although the arts and sciences are considered opposite ends of the academic spectrum, the interconnection between music, math and science is virtually inarguable. At a recent panel discussion in the Grand Reading Room of the Claire T Carney Library at UMass Dartmouth, comprised of physicist and musician, Stephon Alexander and noted playwright, media artist, and musician Morgan James Peters (Mwalim DaPhunkee Professor) who is a professor in the English Department as well as a part of the Black Studies program delved into these intertwined worlds.

Dr. Alexander who is a jazz saxophonist is also author of the book, The Jazz of Physics: The Secret Link Between Music and the Structure of the Universe (Basic Books, 2016). In addition, Alexander, who is currently on faculty at Brown University, who rose to national attention after serving as a consultant on the film version of "A Wrinkle In Time", adapted from the 1962 novel by Madeleine L'Engle.

In discussing the link between jazz, Einsteins theory of the universe, and the physical theories behind "Wrinkle..."Alexander effectively brings together the interconnection of sound, sonic waves, light rays, and the universe. Peters represented the artistic side of the discipline, explained how as a high school student, music was used by his grandfather to help him understand Algebra and Geometry, in terms of the relationship between the number line and music note intervals.

To also further demonstrate how tone, rhythm, and harmony are directly linked to math and science, The ZYG 808 was on hand with his drums as Professor Peters played a keyboard for the gathered audience of about 100 people.

The ZYG 808 will be the featured performer at AILI @ Haley House on May 17, 2018. 12 Made Street, Roxbury, MA. Show starts at 7pm.
