Hamas has committed some heinous crimes on Israel. They have killed over thirteen hundred innocent men, women and children. Israel is in the process of taking revenge. . This is understandable but revenge is one of the worst reactions in our society. Hamas deliberately killed almost thirteen hundred innocent Israelis and Israel’s revenge will be to deliberately kill thousands of innocent Palestinians. Killing innocent people is never justified! Justice is not served by killing innocent people. Terrorists kill innocent people, but a country who wants the respect of the world, should not kill innocent people.
Unfortunately, in our society, we revere revenge, the vaunted payback. In my book, “Leave the Rat Race to the Rats”, I deplore revenge. Revenge only makes things worse. In reality this revered revenge is a major cause of violent crime today. Revenge escalates violence, often leading to a chain reactions of escalating evil deeds. “If he does me harm, I’m gonna get my friends to do much greater harm to him, his friends and even his family. I’m gonna teach him a lesson!” Then this victim retaliates with even more severe violence and so ad infinitum.
Finally, good Christians and Jews, let us not forget the words of the Bible, “Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord”.
