How Televisions Effect Our Lives

[by Andrew Johnson] If we take a good look at the world, we can see that as we go through history, our views change drastically. Technology has brought us to a place where we do not see the forest for the trees. People get so excited about inventions which bring amusement, they fail to understand the impact they may have on themselves, and those they love. Televisions have made us tolerate cruel behaviors which no longer startle us.

Back not too long ago, it was important for families to stay busy with their hands. Once the chores where through, and the evening was coming to a close, different activities would make an appearance to relax each individual. Mom would sew, sister would embroider, dad would play the violin, grandpa would sharpen and oil tools, and brother would carve. Families enjoyed each other, and helped one another to be productive individuals.

TV was invited into many homes, and the people who had the device, were envied. It was a luxury, and many did not feel human without one. Foul language, violence, and nudism were not allowed. The powers that be did not want to corrupt the minds of those who were watching. Even without these aspects, TV still had several dilemmas.

Alcohol flowed with regularity, and smoke clouded many a picture. It was hilarious to see a stumbling drunk, who refused to give up the drink. He, or she, was considered funny, causing some people to laugh until their stomachs hurt. This may have been humorous to many but, since numerous people are easily influenced by what they see, television became a curse.

Another problem was the fact, that Caucasians had most of the roles, especially the lead positions. Asians were given parts as clothes washers, and cooks. People of the African-American persuasion acted as drivers, cooks, butlers, and maids. Native Americans were seen as no more than heathens who did nothing but kill the white man. Women were dumber than men, and were submissive to their men.

Regrettably, the gore and hatefulness that you see in shows of today, moved into the mainstream because people needed to have more shock value. Nudity was once very rare, and now it is incorporated into most everything you see, including animation. Blood, guts, sex acts, and gore are what people crave, and that is exactly what they have been given.

It used to be understood that the sexual act was to be between consenting adults. Now, televisions are full of this practice, and even children get to view. Children as young as five, and six, can tell you what is sex. Will we ever change the garbage that comes from this gadget? We can only hope.

There may be an object in your home that you unwittingly allow to lead you into a type of hypnotic trance. If you are the like the average American, several rooms in your house are equipped with an object that you focus your eyes on. It flickers every few seconds, and can produce a hypnotic-like trance. It is one of the most popular devices of our time—the television set.

More than 96 percent of American homes have at least one set.i Jerry Mander found that although there are many ways to be hypnotized, a number of experts defined hypnotism in such a way that television aptly fits the description. The classic setting for TV watching is similar to a typical environment for hypnotism induction—a darkened room, a flickering light (the TV set) as a single-minded focus, and freedom from outside diversions.ii

People watch programs provided by TV stations, cable companies, satellite networks, videos, and DVDs. The range of programming is diverse—movies, documentaries, sit-coms, sports, music, education, nature, news, ad infinitum. Does what you watch have any effect on your mind and character? It clearly does. From the standpoint of both depression and the frontal lobe, the most disturbing aspects of television relate to the veritable explosion of both sexual content and violence.

Well over a decade ago there were more than 3,000 scientific studies published on the effects of television on the mind.xvi Research continues on the interrelationship. More than 500 books have been written on the subject. It is one of the most well researched subjects in our culture, yet most people have little awareness of TV viewing’s solemn consequences.

Television news programs often publicize lifestyle-related scientific studies, but little is said about the studies done on the effects of television on the mind. We cannot expect the television industry to reveal the truth about itself, but we do not have to remain uninformed.

Six decades after David Sarnoff, President of RCA, unveiled the first television at the 1939 World’s Fair, it is time to ask, what is television doing to our country? More specifically, what is television doing to me?

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any (1 Corinthians 6:12 NKJV).

The apostle Paul tells us that we need to be watchful to not be brought under the power of anything other than God. Although television might not be bad in itself, its use is rarely beneficial to us and we need to be careful about falling into its power.
