Grant to National Civil Rights Museum Will Support Education and Cultural Center

The Links Foundation, Incorporated, the philanthropic arm of The Links, Incorporated, announces the completion of a one million dollar grant to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee and will unveil The Links Education and Cultural Center on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at noon.

Community leaders including the national president of The Links Foundation, Incorporated and The Links, Incorporated, Margot James Copeland; the president of the National Civil Rights Museum, Beverly Robertson; and the superintendent of Shelby County Schools, Dorsey Hopson, will join children from Double Tree Elementary School and other members of the community to view The Links Education and Cultural Center.

The Links Center will be a “learning laboratory, to better connect the past and the present through interactive activities,” said Beverly Robertson, president of the National Civil Rights Museum. The Links Center will also serve as a resource on civil rights history for institutions - locally, regionally and nationally - by offering information not captured in classroom textbooks and by attracting educators, scholars, students, activists and the general public in providing engaging ways for them to learn this history.

The Links are completing the million dollar pledge to support the educational mission of the museum and establish an endowment through the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis. “We are excited to make the final installment of this major financial commitment to the museum,” said Copeland. “This contribution is significant, for it symbolizes that The Links are dedicated to educating our youth and our community about the importance of preserving civil and social rights progress in this country.”

Noting the crucial role played by pioneers for justice, Copeland added that, “As an organization devoted to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the cultural and economic survival of African Americans, it is our solemn duty to honor those who paved the way for social and economic justice for African Americans. Our success as a people, and as a nation, rests on the shoulders of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, Medgar Evers, Dr. Dorothy Height and the legion of others who forged down roads they were told they couldn’t travel.”

“This grant is significant because it is imperative that African-American organizations build their wealth in order to survive and maintain,” said Gladys Gary Vaughn, 13th national president, who was at the helm of the organization when the museum was selected to receive the grant. “Supporting the museum in building their endowment will help to provide a firm financial footing that will sustain for years to come.”

The director of philanthropy for The Links Foundation, Incorporated and The Links, Incorporated, Teree Caldwell-Johnson, says, “The Links Foundation, Incorporated has taken a historic step in supporting the documentation of the stories that tell of the contributions of those individuals who spent their lives fighting for social, civil and economic justice. Establishing an endowment for the museum will ensure the viability of the documentation housed in the Educational and Cultural Center for years to come.”

This award is the third one million dollar grant donated by The Links Foundation, Incorporated. Previous award recipients include the United Negro College Fund and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
