"Its amazing that as community activists we respond to so many senseless acts of violence and even vicious killings like little 9 year old Mya Lyons two years ago today, that many of the dates, families and cases going unresolved pass us by. And this one would have passed me by had I not got an early morning around 2:00 AM from new CAPS Director Ronald Holt asking me to remind others of what today meant and to ask that we stop and remember and lift this family of Mya Lyons up in prayer today for who could imagine the pain today as many of us get up to start a new day, that this family and community have to wake up reminded of the pain, and today, TWO YEARS LATER, this case is still unsolved.
I believe that it was The Chicago Defender and others that reported these words "Minutes after midnight on July 14, 2008, Mya was found by her father, Richard Lyons, in a poorly lit vacant lot overgrown with weeds at the end of an alley about a half of a block from his home in the 8400 block of South Gilbert Court. The father rushed her, with stab wounds to the abdomen and neck, in his van to Jackson Park Hospital. She died a short time later."
I, along with hundreds of community activists gathered for weeks and walked and talked in this area working all our street sources and support for this family, and here are two years later with so many new tragedies before us that some of us may have missed this day. I need to respond back to Ron Holt, and ask him to join in an effort today to at least get public statements from Police Chief Jody Weis and States Attorney Anita Alvarez to publicly state to this family and community that this is still an open case and this family and community be assured that it is not a cold case, and despite all the current unresolved crimes that this one has not been forgotten."
