Shaka Barak:

From my perspective as a 35 - year veteran of Garveyism, I think the most important event for delegates and Africans at home and abroad in this decade, is The World Festival of Black Arts and Cultures held in the Republic of Senegal from December 10-31, 2010. No other event recently has brought Africans together on this scale and with these kinds of meaningful deliberations.

Not since the Jamaican born, Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey (born August 17, 1887, died. June 10, 1940), founder in 1914 and first President General of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA & ACL), held the First International Convention of the Negro Peoples of the World, August 1 - 31, 1920 in the city of New York, U.S.A. have we known of an effort of this magnitude.

As the African Union (AU) that endorsed this 3rd Festival, seeks the completion of a United States of Africa, which includes the African Diaspora, that will unite over 1,000,000,000, by the year 2017, the UNIA ninety years ago, likewise sought the unity of the Edward Wilmot Blyden’s (3 August 1832 – 7 February 1912) estimated 400,000,000 African people of the world.

While Marcus Garvey in the last century brought 25,000 Africans and people of African descent/diaspora from 40 different countries to the first 31 day long convention, today, His Excellency, Mr. Maitre Abdoulaye Wade (br. May 29, 1926), President of Senegal, in office since 1 April 2000, brings together 200,000 of the African race from 80 different countries to the World Festival of Black Arts and Culture.
