The folly of the "Color of Change" Campaign.

The Has launched a campaign against Fox News with the letter below as its signature weapon "Dear Roger Ailes, I was outraged to learn about Fox News' aggressive use of irresponsible language and racist stereotypes in coverage of Senator Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama. From E.D Hill's "terrorist fist jab" comment to demeaning Mrs. Obama's role as wife and mother by demoting her to "Obama's baby mama," Fox continues to malign the progress, politics and personalities of Black America. Fox has developed a pattern of airing racially offensive attacks, then apologizing only after controversy erupts. Forced, half-hearted apologies do not demonstrate good faith when the larger pattern of offensive rhetoric continues. Fox has a serious problem with using race as a divisive tool. Your network must find a solution to address racial sterotyping and hate-mongering before it hits the airwaves. What new changes will Fox News make to ensure the integrity of its coverage? This is a question you should be able to answer immediately. Throughout this election campaign, and beyond, I intend to hold you, your network, its advertisers and personalities accountable for any further attempts to undermine the Obamas, Black institutions and other Black Americans by preying on prejudice, ignorance and racial division. Signed, [Your name] According to Mikael Mohammed (sic) "Here's what happened recently: After Senator Obama won the nomination, he and his wife gave each other a "pound" in front of the cameras. Fox anchor E.D. Hill called the act of celebration a "terrorist fist jab." Then last week, a Fox News on-screen graphic referred to Michelle Obama as "Obama's baby mama"--slang used to describe the unmarried mother of a man's child. It was a clear attempt to associate the Obamas with negative cultural stereotypes about Black people, an insult not only to Michelle Obama but to women and Black people everywhere. After each of the incidents mentioned, Fox issued some form of weak apology. But what does it mean when you slap someone in the face, apologize the next day, then slap them again on the third? It means the apology is meaningless. These aren't one-time incidents--they're part of a pattern that continues no matter how often Fox is forced to apologize. Fox has a clear record of attacking and undermining Black institutions, Black leaders, and Black people in general. If we don't push back now, we will see more of the same from now until November. Please join me in helping to bring an end to Fox's behavior. " My reaction: here goes another deflection people's energy and intentions. As note above, what ever happened happend before. Fox News is a serial offender. And, they will continue to be offensive to those who listen and watch because both Fox and the offended are is a cohabitating relatonship. Junkies. That's who they are. It feel good when they are getting fixed. After the rubberband high the swear never again. But never agan never comes. People you have a Jones for Fox News. You who are offend have a JONES for punishment and for being insulted. The freedom of the press is a right. However, being Jonesed on what offends you is not a right. You don't have to listen. Turning on Fox News is not a right - you have no right to listen. It is an addiction. People wake up and break the addiction. Let the question be asked, is it possible for Fox News to offend you when you are not watching or listening? What you are listening and what you hear is the future you are living into - it is your world. Time for a change. Yes we can. Yes we can turn the dial. Have you not listened to Frederick Douglass: "Power concedes nothing with out a demand" Take Fox News advertisers hands out your pockets and your eyes off their network and all will be well. This is not different from the so-called Sean Bell protests. Has anyone proposed a Bill to change the Law or create new Laws Sanctioning the Police. NO. People are addicted to abuse. Got a Jones for punishments! It is time we stand up and be responsible for who we are being and its impact. Time to exercise real power - yes, we are addicted to the things we rail against. I agree entirely with Bro. Kwesi, here we go again, some of us calling for the wasteful expenditure of emotion and psychic because the KKK keeps acting like the KKK, or "America" being itself.

    As-Salaam Alaikum,

Your are right my Brother, this is just more of the same! If you line all of the media generated hate-talk and connect the dots a clear picture forms -- in my view it a very ugly picture that has a very long history (over 400 years long).
I'd say the KKK has taken off their hoods and replaced them with business suits and blue uniforms.

There is a rhetorical question going around the white-supremist websites
that asks: "If Obama wins can the seat of power still be called 'the whitehouse?'" Good question!

The Future Belongs to the Black Nation.

  • Akwaaba,

I say do not waste energy turning off what offends us.
Use our energy to Turn On our selves.
Turn on our ideas, opinions, our voices and our actions.
When we turn on and tune in to what empowers us, there will be nothing to turn off.

Brother KWASI I concur! I don't watch the Fake News Network nor have I ever! Personally speaking it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out we, Black people are not the target demographic of the Fake News Network! That having been said, instead of constantly complaining about being disrespected by the FNN as well as the other coporate controlled networks, simply "Turn Off Channel Zero"!
