Now The Pressure Begins

From the RampartsJunious Ricardo StantonNow The Pressure Begins“Tuesday June 03, 2008, 9:00 PM Sen. Barack Obama goes over the 2,118 delegates needed, making him the presidential nominee based on the projected delegate counts. once the polls closed in S.D., CNN's Wolf Blitzer said Obama would get at least four of those delegates, which sealed the nomination for him. ‘This is a historic moment,’ Blitzer said as the camera showed cheering Obama supporters in Charlotte, N.C. "This is an exciting moment. It's the first time in our history that an African American has secured the presidential nomination of a major party.’ Obama not only raised a lot of money, but created a movement behind him that has helped to lift him, CNN analyst David Gergen said. ‘He has changed the course of American history.’” http://www.mlive.com/elections/index.ssf/2008/06/cnn_projects_sen_barack_obama.htmlThe cable propaganda machine is aglitter about Barak Obama apparently winning enough pledged delegates Tuesday to be the 2008 presidential nominee for the Democratic Party. They are calling it an historical moment and in many ways it is. Here a half-Black man has been catapulted within a traditionally racist system and has positioned himself to be the presumptive presidential nominee of a major political party. This is a moment most black people regardless of our level of political awareness never though would see in our lifetimes. For better or worse, this moment is full of irony on so many levels. It’s ironic that during times of widening income disparity and economic uncertainty, a black man looks like he is going to be the Democratic party’s nominee. It’s ironic that Obama got there because of white support. Remember, black voters did not embrace Obama until they saw him winning significant white support in white states like Iowa which he won and New Hampshire which he lost. But once black folks caught on to his campaign, they threw three hundred eighty-one years of oppression and marginalization out the window to embrace Obama’s message of hope and change. It remains to be seen whether or not this is a wise decision.I was watching the local PBS station and started flipping the channel to see what CNN was saying about the last two primaries in South Dakota and Montana . They had the usual talking heads on giving their opinions and biases. They did not provide much clarity they only spouted their own biases. But the question of him picking Hillary Rodham Clinton as his running mate was already being suggested.Poor Barack Obama we have seen him compromise so much just to get to this point, my question is; what else will he do, how else will he sell his soul to get to the next level? What type of Faustian deal will he cut with the ruling oligarches to see his dream of being elected president become a reality? Already factions are calling for a “dream ticket” of Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, which I find so contradictory. If Obama succumbs to the pressure he will put himself in a box which will surely undermine his credibility and all he has worked so hard to accomplish. How can he base his campaign on the premise, prospect and promise of “change” then take on Hillary Rodham Clinton as his running mate who is the consummate representative of the status quo? If the Clinton faction (the Democratic Leadership Committee) of the Democratic Party forces Obama to take Clinton as his running mate it will be a disaster and that decision will be his undoing.Picking Hillary Rodham Clinton would be suicidal, literally and figuratively. The Clintons come as a package. It would be hypocritical for Obama to have a war mongering, morally challenged ex president like Bill Clinton looking over his shoulder second guessing him, causing mischief as the husband of the Vice President. Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton both, as their campaign revealed, have major entitlement issues and each one brings a ton of negative baggage with them that ultimately will be detrimental to Obama and the Democratic party.Obama claims to be for change: he is opposed to the Iraq invasion and occupation and he says corporatism will not rule his administration. On the surface to bring Clinton on or a Clinton surrogate would destroy any credibility Obama has established during his campaign run. But keep in mind Obama has said he favors a stronger and better equipped military and he is not opposed to military intervention. This is alarming because currently AmeriKKKan foreign policy is based upon military threats and intervention around the globe. Will Obama be the melanin face of US imperialism? The military industrial complex enjoyed major profits under the Bu$h administration, they are now supporting Obama. They don't give money just because they like his media image and campaign message. The other form of immense pressure Obama will be subjected to will come later this week when he goes before the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee as the presumptive Democratic candidate. On the national level no candidate can be successful if he or she does not toe the line drawn by the Israeli lobby. The pressure on him will be tremendous, to rattle the sabers for war against Iran. Obama’s speech at AIPAC this week will be a telling indication of his integrity because in the past he has called for an even handed approach to the Palestinian issue and politics in the region. If AIPAC and the rest of the Israeli lobby feel Obama is not supportive enough of their agenda, it will be a major problem for him.Remember what happened to Cynthia McKinney? The Republicans and Zionists targeted her and were instrumental in smearing her and aiding her defeat in her bid for re-election. They did the same thing to David Hilliard of Alabama when they flooded this opponents’ coffers with out of state money because he suggested a policy of fairness to the Palestinians! Keep an eye on Obama’s speech before AIPAC, later this week. It will provide insight into just how far he is willing to go to appease an influential block of donors and voters. If he fails to woo them, he is toast. What would happen if Obama was under the same kind of pressure from black folks?Obama is the presumptive Democratic nominee but the pressure on him to conform, sell his soul and become palatable to white folks will be tremendous. We saw what they did to him on the Jeremiah Wright/Trinity United Church issue. That was just the beginning. I see he now wears a flag lapel pin. The Israel issue will be the next major test for him. The question is, will this pressure crush him, force him to compromise and totally sell out? Time will tell.-30-
