My New Year's resolution is to continue the work of waking our people up from the brainwashed coma we have been in for almost 400 years. Our self-destructive and self-hatred must be reversed by spiritually educating our hearts and minds.

To support this resolution, I have instituted an educational discussion group in our local public library. We meet weekly to discuss the problems of our people and deliberate solutions to those problems. Our areas of discussion are spiritual, economic, cultural, health and safety and education.

This discussion group is open to all willing to deal honestly with solutions to our problems. One major difference between our group and others we have been exposed to and even been involved with is our focus.

Our focus is very narrow. We are all about focussing on the problems and solutions of Black people exclusively. We are willing to collaborate with others, but only when the focus is narrow enough to benefit our people.

This has become necessary because of one big mistake we have made in the past, over and over again.

Our focus must be and will be focussed on Black peoples issues. Why? Because, in the past, we have advocated for human rights, gay rights, civil rights, etc. and that has resulted in legislation and changes in the societal mores that is much too vague and nebulous.

Thus, we are witnesses today of immigrants and foreigners coming into this country taking advantage of and benefiting from legislation and changes in this society that we fought, bled and died for. Yet, Blacks, on the whole have been unable to access the benefits because of the lack of focus.

So, in 2014, we are advocating for results that are specifically focussed upon and applicable to Black people EXCLUSIVELY and unashamedly. In this way, Black people benefit, to the exclusion of others, instead of the current status quo.

Our hope is more of our people begin to understand the necessity of focus and specificity to avoid the same pattern of denial. May 2014 be a pivotal year for Black people in this country, where we as a people continue to awaken to who we are - a great, creative and resilient people with a wonderful future that we shall forge together with the Most High.

This is my resolution of 2014. How about yours?

    Shalom, my brothers and sisters.
