Please consider that the possibility that freedom has everything to do with our way oof being and nothing else.
Nat Turner freed himself.
And, so did Sojourner Truth.
I'd rather die a free man that live a slave said Nat Turner and this was also echoed by Sam Sharpe and many others.
Freedom is not cheep may of us would get "credit" from the master than pay the price of freedom.
Yes, freedom has very little to do with our physical circumstance and everything to do who we be in those circumstances.
