Battling Over Birth: Black Women and the Maternal Health Care Crisis, a new book from Praeclarus Press, addresses the disparities in maternal mortality, and why Black women are more likely to die when they have a baby than their White counterparts. Battling Over Birth is a study of 100 Black women in California and is written by Black Women Birthing Justice.

Praeclarus Press is pleased to announce a new book by Black Women Birthing Justice: Battling Over Birth: Black Women and the Maternal Health Care Crisis. This book is the result of an exhaustive study into the disparities faced by Black Women in the US during pregnancy and birth. Black Women Birthing Justice is a collective of African-American, African, Caribbean and multiracial women who are committed to transforming birthing experiences for black women and transfolks. Their vision is that every pregnant person should have an empowering birthing experience, free of unnecessary medical interventions and forced separation from their children. Their goals are to educate, to document birth stories and to raise awareness about birthing alternatives. They aim to challenge human rights violations, rebuild confidence in Black women's ability to give birth, and decrease disproportionate maternal and infant mortality. The authors of Battling Over Birth are Julia Chinyere Oparah, Helen Arega, Dantia Hudson, Linda Jones, and Talita Oseguera.

Thank you for this post. Everyone really needs to understand the facts surrounding infant mortality especially as it pertains to Black Women and childbirth. There are many layers of systemic, structural, and societal oppressive acts against Black Women. These acts cross all socioeconomic backgrounds, Battling Over Birth: Black Women and the Maternal Health Care Crisis.
is a actually a defining symptom of multi-faceted daily injustice against Black Women. What is beautiful and so necessary about this book is it is researched and written by Black Women. This is extremely important because its time for us to tell our own stories. If we want to make changes we have to do our own research, and write our truths.
