Promoting Health

I am a Social Work student doing a field work placement at a free health clinic in Milwaukee called Bread of Healing. Located in 3 churches, we serve thousands of people annually with chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholestorol. Many of these people have more than one problem on top of mental health concerns. We help people apply for benefits such state provided health insurance called BadgerCare. You can learn more about the clinic on our website: breadofhealing.org

Too often people lose their jobs or change jobs and lose access to health insurance. I mentioned how people have these chronic conditions. They may not be diagnosed with these illnesses until they have been forced to go to the emergency room with an acute condition that nearly scares the life out of them. That's when they're told, what has been going on. Then they may receive a small sample of some medication but they're unable to get refills. I hear about the sometimes spectacular things that happen when a 1 or 2 day medical access event takes place. There is a kind of Doctors without Borders group that stages free health health and all kinds of people flock to the site. Those are helpful but people should also check in their communities to see whether places like our clinic are around those other 50 or so weeks of the year.
