[By Lakizzy Covington] Sickle Cell Anemia Disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects the red blood cell. Then you have the Sickle Cell Trait which means a person inherited the gene for the Sickle Cell Disease. If two people have a baby and both of them have the Sickle Cell Trait there is a possibility that their child/children will produce the disease. Babies are tested at birth to be sure that they haven't inherited the disease. Statistics says that 1,000 babies are born with the disease each year. There are over 70,000 people in America that is battling this disease.

Sickle Cell Anemia is often said that only African American's are the only race that is affected. That is a false! This disease is present in 11 other countries so it affect different cultures. There are no known cure at this time but researchers are working on finding a cure. People who has this disease can live a normal life as long as they continue to take care of themselves. It's also good to have love and support from the people around them. I have an aunt that battled sickle Cell Anemia Disease her entire life. The Life expectancy for Americans living with this disease is somewhere around mid 40's.

My aunt died on December 1,2010 at the age of 44 from complications due to her Sick Cell Disease. By the time she passed away she was on dialysis due to kidney failure, her heart was failing, and so were her liver. This all happened within a 6 month period. That's why its important to get checked for different diseases and to know the background of the person whom you plan to have children with. Even though they haven't found a cure. With the proper medicine sometimes this disease can be controlled. Don't let this disease ruin your life!
