NATIONAL COALITION DECLARES 'A CRISIS OF MORAL LEADERSHIP
The National Coalition is declaring that Jamaica is facing 'a crisis of moral leadership', that the
Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People's National Party (PNP) have now demonstrated through their own actions that they are incapable of governing, and that it is clearly time for an alternative to these two long standing political dinosaurs.
This follows the disgraceful flare up among rival supporters of the two established parties on
Thursday March 10. It was sparked by claims by Justice Minister and Attorney General Dorothy
Lightbourne that PNP attorney K.D. Knight had offended her 31 years ago, by kicking her chair and declaring that "all Labourites fi dead". In another incident, the blatant, barefaced attack on the
Spanish Town Police Station earlier this week, by gunmen from one of the well known criminal
gangs which is openly affiliated to the PNP, is frightening and unacceptable.
The National Coalition's declaration of a crisis of moral leadership also follows the recent
disclosure by Prime Minister Bruce Golding that he knowingly concealed the fact that former JLP
MP Everard Warmington had been ineligible to run for a seat in Parliament, according to the
Jamaican Constitution, because he was a citizen of the United States.
Condemnation of the current leadership by the National Coalition also reflects on the ongoing
Manatt-Dudus Enquiry. Described by many as a farce, the Enquiry is costing the country some $40million, is apparently going nowhere with witness after witness claiming memory lapses, and
effectively has no "teeth", as whatever the outcome, Jamaica has no legislation in place to punish
those guilty of corruption.
In a joint announcement from Betty Ann Blaine, Founder/Convener of New Nation Coalition
(NNC) and Peter Townsend, Chairman of the National Democratic Movement (NDM), the National Coalition stresses:
"The behavior of our leaders has hit an all time low – all the things that have happened this week
demonstrate that there is a crisis of moral leadership in the country. These continuous examples of
deception, lack of respect for the population, and now this latest disgraceful behavior – all beg the
question – if leaders behave this way, what should we expect from criminals? Where is the example for the children and youth?
"There can no longer be any doubt in the minds of Jamaicans that either of the two long standing
parties are morally, ethically able to govern the country – all moral credibility on the part of either,
has now been lost.
"Any Jamaican who means the country any good must now reject that lack of civility, integrity, the
brutishness that we have seen over the last several days. It is time for an alternative to the JLP and the PNP in the Jamaican leadership arena. This is the time for people to become a part of the
National Coalition to rescue Jamaica from this crisis"
The NDM and the NNC came together on February 2, 2011, to form the National Coalition,
founded on the key values of Unity and Respect for the Jamaican people.
