Ghanaian king awarded honorary UWI doctorate

HE'S ROYAL: Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, receiving his honorary Doctorate from UWI Chancellor Sir George Alleyne. CHANCELLOR of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Asantehene was conferred an honorary doctorate from the University of the West Indies at the graduation on Saturday. After thanking the university for the honour, Asantehene spoke to the graduands on leadership. He blamed the financial crisis on the "dismal failure of leadership at all levels". "To extricate our world as we know it out of this terrible but self-imposed morass, there is now more than ever the need for a direct, large and sustained injection of leadership in all aspects of human endeavour," he said. He drew reference to the late Reverend Martin Luther King, whom he said continued to inspire others 30 years after his premature death. The Ghanaian king gave several examples as he expounded on his ten lessons of leadership, which are as follows: * Do not be all things to all men. Be yourself. Don't try to be what you are not, and hold dear to the things that you believe in. * You cannot achieve anything in life if you don't have a vision of what you want to do, who you want to be and just as importantly, how you want to get there. * Have confidence in yourself. * Begin with your strengths and leverage on them. * Do not compromise on values. * Success is most satisfying when it is earned. * Persevere! Even when failure is staring you in the face. * Learn to respond instead of reacting. He finished his presentation by wishing the graduands "warm words on a cold evening, a full moon on a dark night, and the road downhill all the way to your door".
