Education Initiative: Sisters on the Rise to Help Move Previously Incarcerated Women into Higher Education

With the honor of being awarded a matching grant of $425,000 from Robert Wood Johnson's Foundation Local Funding Partnerships CYWD's education initiative, Sisters on the Rise, is underway and has completed its first year.
Our Sisters on the Rise Education Initiatives Director Ana Maria Coral  is working hard coordinating and strengthening existing mental health, mentoring, substance abuse, parenting and education services toward the goal of helping participants achieve successful health, educational and career advancement outcomes.

The Education Initiative  is aimed to help move system-involved young women in San Francisco into higher education, and to establish education as a viable option to incarceration. Sisters on the Rise will develop individualized educational plans for each participant that will include high school diploma or GED completion, as well as exposure to colleges, universities, and vocational training programs. The program will provide each young woman who joins the cohort with an educational assessment to help set the course of their individualized academic plan, as well as coordinate an educational support team of tutors, life coaches, therapists, college admissions coaches, and support groups. Each participant will attend individual counseling sessions, weekly study groups, and educational workshops on topics such as the college admissions process, financial aid, and college preparation.

As we delve in the second year of the Education Initiative CYWD will be hosting Roundtable meetings to facilitate the cross-systems, corss-sector work needed to bring together child welfare, juvenile justice, education agencies, funders, innovative businesses, policymakers, youth, girls and women, elders, coummunity members and other stakeholders. Join us at our first roundtable: "Increasing Access to Higher Education for Young Women" which will be Tuesday, August 20, 2013 from 2-4p featuring guest speakers: Kriztina Palone, Director of San Francisco Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services and C.Jason Bell the Director of Project Rebound. If you are able to join us please RSVP with our SOR Education Initiatives Director Ana Maria at acorral@cywd.org.

We hope to see you there.
