There will be a march and rally Sunday, May 15th, to mark the second anniversary of the police killing of Basire Farrell. Participants will assemble at the corner of Tillinghast Street and Clinton Place, Newark, the scene of the crime, at 1pm and then march at 2pm.

The march and rally is being sponsored by the friends and family of Basire Farrell and the People's Organization for Progress.

This march and rally takes place at a time when the Newark Police Department has just come under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department.

We demand justice for Basire Farrell, another victim of the Newark Police Department.    Basire Farrell, age 30 who would have celebrated his 31st birthday on May 17, 2009.  A loving father of three, a son, brother, nephew, cousin and friend, unarmed, Basire Farrell was brutally assaulted and beaten to death by Newark Police officers on  May 15, 2009.

  • It is said that seven police officers were involved in the beating to death of Basire Farrell
  • It is said that Basire Farrell was walking home, when police chased  him and hit him with their car
  • It is said that they  jumped out of their car and began beating Basire Farrell unmercifully
  • It is said that Basire Farrell was kicked and beaten while on the ground with his hands cuffed  behind his back
  • It is said that Basire Farrell was tasered repeatedly
  • It is said that a police officer went to his trunk to get a bottle of water then proceeded to share it with other officers to wash Basire Farrell’s blood off their hands , thereby, destroying  evidence.
  • It is said that a yellow plastic bag was placed over Basire Farrell’s head and the officers proceeded to laugh
  • It is said that Basire Farrell was placed in a black body bag not zipped

We ask, are lives in Black skins less important that lives in White skins?  We ask why is Basire Farrell life in Black skin less important than a life in White skin?

We ask, why Basire Farrell couldn’t survive an arrest by seven Newark Police Officers?

We ask, why was Basire Farrell added to the list of other Blacks murdered by the Newark Police?

WE DEMAND:

We Demand a thorough investigation by the State Attorney General of the Newark Police Department and the seven officers involved in the brutal slaying of Basire Farrell.

We demand that the seven officers be tried and brought to justice for the murder of Basire Farrell.

We demand a civilian review board with full subpoena powers.

We demand an end to police brutality and genocide against Black people in Essex County .
