PRESS CONFERENCE FOR MLK INT’L DAY OF ACTION!
On Monday, January 4th, the People’s Organization for Progress will host an important press conference on its upcoming International Day of Action to honor the birthday of the immortal Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The press conference will take place at 1pm at the new Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial Monument near the Essex County Hall of Records on Martin Luther King Blvd between Springfield Avenue and Market Street.
Joining POP Chairman Lawrence Hamm will be Newark Mayor Ras Baraka among other endorsing participants in the upcoming action.
The People’s Organization for Progress is calling for Friday, January 15th, the actual birthday of the immortal Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to be an International Day of Action in this great man’s honor, hoping that it will inevitably help bring together recent waves of social justice protest. In Newark, they will host the ‘Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. March for Racial Equality, Economic Justice and Peace’ to dramatize that call!
Participants will assemble at the Lincoln Monument on Springfield Av. and West Market St, Newark at 12 noon.
“It’s time to heed some of the wisdom of Dr. King’s last days and bring together progressive labor forces, college students and the youth and clergy, and others, in a real, more coordinated movement for racial equality, economic justice and world peace,” said the indefatigable Lawrence Hamm, the founding chairman of the People’s Organization for Progress.
“It is also time to raise the stakes regarding the issues of these times,” he continued pointedly.
The national holiday takes on a more ceremonial character, organizers noted respectfully. The actual birthday can now be used to galvanize support around common issues around the world.
