On Tuesday, November 20th, join Baba Zayid Muhammad, the New Black Panther Party’s longtime Newark-based national minister of culture , and members of the People’s Organization for Progress, as they renew the call for the City of Newark to rename a major street after Newark’s most famous living legend and native son, Amiri Baraka!
They will speak at the Newark City Council meeting at 6:30pm. The City Council meeting will take place at Newark City Hall, 920 Broad Street, Newark.
Muhammad issued a similar call in 2004 when Baraka turned 70 and rallied in front of City Hall to dramatize the point. The Peoples Organization for Progress formally stated their request just last week and renewed the effort.
“It was received with great respect back then, but in the end, it hasn’t happened yet,” he recalled.
“This is the city that first started naming streets and institutions after Black heroes, especially local Black heroes, back in the early 70s, inspired by the wisdom of Baba Amiri’s leadership back then, ” he continued.
“It’s time for this City to remember to love Amiri back,” he finished emphatically.
Organizations and individuals who want to join the campaign to make the renaming happen are encouraged to send their letters to the Mayor and to City Council.
