FREE OUR MANDELAS - Still Imprisoned COINTELPRO/CIVIL RIGHTS ERA Political Activists - Call To Action - Now Is The Time!

On November 5, 2010, the U.S. Human Rights Report to the United Nations called attention to having an African American President, Attorney General, and Secretaries of State. Today, U.S. Representative Harold Koh played his Korean ancestry. At no time did the U.S. acknowledge the still imprisoned COINTELPRO/Civil Rights Era political activists, human rights defenders who paved the way for them. These longtime imprisoned activists, criminalized and imprisoned over 30 years, are like the U.S.’s George Washington, a South Africa’s Nelson Mandela, Brazil’s Dilma Rouseff; all considered criminals by the governments they challenged. Now is the time for the United States, like South Africa and other celebrated countries, to make a peace with its past.

Today, we call upon President Barack Obama to

1. Take immediate steps to use his presidential clemency powers and commute the sentences to time served and immediate release of all imprisoned COINTELRO/Civil Rights Era political activists currently held in federal custody;

2. Direct the Obama-Holder Department of Justice to review the convictions of all COINTELPRO/Civil Rights Era political activists in federal or state custody to identify and address civil and human rights violations; and

3. Use the Obama Administration’s executive authority to create a National Truth and Reconciliation Commission, for release and compensation of all COINTELPRO/Civil Rights Era political activists currently held in federal and state facilities.
