EMERGENCY PRESS CONFERENCE IN DEFENSE OF MOTHER TRAUMATIZED BY NEWARK POLICE
On Thursday, October 28th, the New Black Panther Party will host an emergency press conference detailing its condemnation of the wrongful and abusive and arrest of Erika Hankerson this past Saturday.
The press conference will take place at 12 noon at Newark City Hall.
Hankerson was arrested after leaving a neighborhood after party with her sister and her niece in response to a call about a ‘fight.’ When arrested, Hankerson, ironically the mother of 15 year oldTravis Rattray, who was beaten on videotape by a Newark undercover police officer just months ago, had her clothes torn improperly exposing some of her torso, was told to shut the f’ up and f’ her Miranda rights. Arresting officers then maced her sister and niece. Although no fight ever even took place, Hankerson was charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, among other charges.
The press conference will not only condemn the brutal treatment of Hankerson, the Party will also announce their formal support for a probe of the Newark Police Department initiated by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Darryl Scipio, a representative for the ACLU, will also participate in the press conference with other activists and supporters.
Our demands here are clear,” said area Panther leader and spokesman for the Hankerson family, Zayid Muhammad.
“All charges should be dropped, the officers involved should be terminated, the city should apologize to the Hankerson’s for what happened to Erika and for their pathetic inability to reign in brutal police officers, the Justice Department should initiate a serious investigation of Newark police and City Council ought to implement an independent monitor to be a watchdog over police corruption and abuse,” he finished emphatically.
