Afro-Latinos Joining Hands With African Americans

The African Union through its African Union Commission convened the African Diaspora Meeting, labeled "Building Bridges Across the Atlantic," in which six Diaspora representatives were elected to do the Mandate of:

I. Identifying key Diaspora concerns in consultation with recognized Diaspora groups;

II. Working to establish a model for a database of the Diaspora for the United States Regional Network; and

III. To work with the representational offices to identify delegates to the follow up sessions, Summit preparatory workshop in South Africa and workshop for the development of legal framework.

The African Union Diaspora Task Team members are: Dr. Chika Onyeani for Media: Chair, Eng. Daniel Ochweri forYouth: Vice Chair, Dr. Georgina Falú for Afro-Latinos: Secretary, MBA Kathy Jenkins-Ewa for Gender: Development, Lord Sidique Wai, and, Mr. Omowale Clay for communities: Members and Prof. Economist Yaw Nyarko. 

Dr. Georgina Falú has a Doctorate in Education from Columbia University, an MBA at Berkeley-Cal.U., and a Diploma from Harvard University. She is Founder and President of The Falu Foundation and teaches Afro-Latinos History & Culture at the Black Studies Program at City College.

Tomas Fernandez Robaina is a prolific author on Afro-Cuban issues, a senior researcher at theNational Library in Havana and at the Department of Historical-Cultural Studies and Library Science, an Assistant Professor of the Faculties of Social Communication and the Arts and Humanities at the University of Havana.

He wrote The Blacks in Cuba 1902-1958: Notes on the History of the Struggle Against Racial Discrimination as well as Afro-Cuban Culture, AND MANY OTHERS. Tomas is also Advisor of the Fernando Ortiz Foundation, a member of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), and of the Cuban National Committee on Slave Routes as well as a number of other national organizations.
