Snippets from the 01-01-18 Kwanzaa and Freedom Day Celebration that took place at La Unique African-American Cultural Center in Camden New Jersey. The owner Larry Miles held the seventeen annual Kwanzaa celebration there. He urged the attendees, in addition to celebrating Kwanzaa to also celebrate December 31- January 1 as an uniquely African-American holiday he calls Freedom Day to commemorate when our ancestors watched and waited for the word freedom had been attained. On December 31, 1862 the night before the Emancipation Proclamation was officially read, enslaved Africans gathered, waited and watched to hear the word. Larry Miles believes African-Americans should celebrate January 1 and the fact our ancestors took the initiative to fight for their freedom once they were allowed to join the Union army.
