The Odunde Festival has been held the second Sunday in June for 39 years. It is the largest African based street festival in the United States it attracts hundreds of thousand of people. It is based on the Yoruba tradition of honoring the Orisha/spirit of Osun. Devotees of Yoruba, Santeria, Voodun march to the the Schuylkill RIver to trow in prayers, fruit, honey, flowers and money to Osun for a blessed New Year. Once the ceremonies are concluded the festivities begin with live entertainment, an African style marketplace and a family atmosphere. This video was shot prior to the procession to the river.
