Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter announces 67% of contracts for the construction of the President's House where George Washington kept nine Africans in brutal bondage will be African-American and other formerly locked out business persons. Due to community agitation, demonstrations and negotiations the US Parks Service and US government were forced to admit Washington kept enslaved Africans and they subsequently agreed to erect a commemorative interactive historical momument as part of the project's construction. Thanks to the Avenging the Ancestors Coalition headed by attorney Michael Coard and several local Philadelphia elected officials the project is going forward. This $10 million dollar project will be the first government sanctioned project to acknowledge the horrors of slavery as part of the Independence Historical Area. The area is next to Independence Hall where the "Liberty Bell" is located.
