BETWEEN THE BRICKS STUDENT PRODUCED WEB SERIES TAKES EDUCATION ADVOCACY UP A NOTCH

YMS Students premiere new Web Show at Summer Session Graduation August 15, 2014

Students of the Youth Media Symposium in partnership with the Abbott Leadership Institute at Rutgers University will be premiering their new Web Series, Between the Bricks, during the Summer Program Graduation Dinner. The premiere will be held at the Paul Robeson Center in the Essex Room at 4:45pm on Friday August 15, 2014.

YMS Students spent six weeks in workshop classes that included Web Show Production, Revolutionary Writing, Power of the Media, and Photography. In addition they studied elements of the Newark Uprising with ALI Director, Lecturer, and Author, Junius Williams.

"YMS will become the premier youth journalist in the City of Newark, telling their own stories, and using the media to bring attention to their issues. This web show is the best platform for their vision"states Kaleena Berryman, ALI Program Coordinator.

Between the Bricks is an informative educational news show written and produced by the YMS Students. Each episode will present an issue that deals with advocating for a better education in Newark, NJ in a way that will encourage and inspire other Newark school students to get involved.  Chosen by the YMS Students, this summer’s first episode will deal with some of the misconceptions about the type and quality of education given by the Public, Charter and Magnet school choices. This is likely to become a regular show produced by YMS.

In addition the YMS Students also produced a companion web show for the Summer Session.Between the Bricks: In Depth is an in-depth look at an issue studied over the Summer Session. This summer the YMS Students studied elements of the Newark Uprising in 1967. They decided to look at a hard-hit neighborhood and whether lack of school security played a part in its recovery.

The Graduation Dinner will include projects YMS Students have done in Media, Photography and the YMSBlog.
