This Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at CEMOTAP CENTER, located at 135-05 Rockaway Boulevard, South Ozone Park, Queens, NY, CEMOTAP, The Committee To Eliminate Media Offensive To African People, will be hosting a forum entitled an “Update on Like it Is and Gil Noble.” Dr. James McIntosh, CEMOTAP Co- chair, will present an overview of what has taken place to date at WABC TV since the recent health related retirement of Gil Noble and what must take place in the future. He will be joined by Activist Larry Hamm of Peoples Organization for Progress, Broadcaster Bernard White of Take Back WBAI, Viola Plummer of December 12th Movement, NYC Councilman Charles Barron and Gil Noble’s daughter Lisa Noble, who will give an update on her father’s condition.
CEMOTAP Co-chair Betty Dopson says she is hoping that prior to Saturday’s forum, WABC TV President and General Manager Dave Davis will keep his word to her that WABC will continue a public affairs series in the tradition of Gil Noble’s award winning series “Like It Is.” "The fact that Mr. Davis will be interviewing the consummate broadcaster, Imhotep Gary Byrd this week gives me cause for hope that he will,” said Dopson. When asked her opinion of the series, “Here and Now,” currently running in Noble’s old time slot, Ms. Dopson would only say, “I think we have said enough about that already. Clearly the show is a disappointment. We all need to move forward. I think that Gary Byrd would bring to WABC TV all that they need to keep the promise they have made to the community.”
Dr. McIntosh agreed that Byrd’s hiring at WABC TV will have a “big impact on what will be said” at this meeting but noted that the meeting is not simply about someone getting a job. “This meeting is about the access to public airways that the 3 million people of African Ancestry in this city deserve, “said McIntosh.
