Twelve important questions to help you move from “dream state” to “real state.”

On a sheet of paper, write responses to each of the following questions:

1) What is your vision for yourself and/or your business?

2) What are your values–those non-negotiable principles by which you live and govern your life?

3) What are your goals? Think about all dimensions of your life, as they are interconnected. You may find it helpful to create goals and sub-goals for each of the major categories that you value:

a) health

b) family

c) spiritual

d) financial

e) business and career

f) community and politics

Make sure your goals are S.M.A.R.T.E.R: Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic, Time-bound, Ethical and Resourced (source: www.achieve-goal-setting-success.com).

4) What are your top priorities? If you were forced to pick no more than five goals, what would they be?

5) How are you currently spending your time relative to your goals and priorities? How much time do you spend on non-core activities (those activities that do not support your goals?

6) Are your activities and commitments aligned with your personal and professional objectives?

7) Are you making progress towards your longer-term goals?

8) What metrics do you have in place to assess your progress?

9) Do you have a networking strategy? If so, is it aligned with your goals and objectives — both short- and long-term?

10) What changes should your make in order to increase the effectiveness of your networking?

11) How have you contributed to advancing your community?

12) Are your personal and professional relationships productive? Are you spending time with the right people?

Once you have thoughtfully answered these questions, your next step is to keep a copy of your five top priorities with you and review them frequently to make sure that you are time and activities are aligned with your goals. Happy 2012!
