SALAGA, Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade traveling exhibit is provided by OBey
Foundation. The SALAGA traveling exhibit explores the long arduous journey
of enslaved and rebellious Africans along the slave routes to the coastal
areas. Through panel photos, artifacts, photo catalogues, replicas and
music, the exhibit will examine the significance of the slave route history,
landmarks and artifacts that represent 400 years of the Trans-Atlantic Slave
Trade. It touches on History, geography, human services, humanities,
cultural enrichment, world studies, language arts, art and music.
The goal of presenting this program to UNCC and the surrounding community is
to increase students, faculty, staff and surrounding Mecklenburg community
members' knowledge of the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade as a human tragedy.
This program serves to develop positive attitudes through dialogue which
promote understanding and tolerance as well as a commitment to combat racism
and all forms of oppression and discrimination. It intends to promote
tolerance and a culture of peace and healing among various communities, in
particular with respect to racism in the world and hatred between
communities. Last, it aims to raise issues such as human rights, importance
of values such as freedom, equality, dignity and justice as well as their
effective applications; and to encourage new forms of learning history
through the use of primary sources, the arts and interactive lessons.
