PEOPLES ORGANIZATION FOR PROGRESS
TO HOST SPECIAL LABOR DAY RALLY AND MARCH FOR JOBS
AS A PART OF ITS ‘DAILY PEOPLES CAMPAIGN’!
On Monday, September 5th, the Peoples Organization for Progress (POP) will host an important march and rally for jobs as a part of its ‘Daily People’s Campaign’!
Participants will assemble at 12 noon at the Lincoln Monument on Springfield Av. and West Market Street and then march to Broad and Market Streets, downtown Newark.
The march and rally will mark day 71 of the Daily People’s Campaign for Jobs, Peace, Justice and Equality. The Campaign was launched on June 27th to dramatize the impact of draconian public policies on ordinary people. POP vows to host this daily action everyday for 381 days in honor of the epic Montgomery Bus Boycott that propelled a young Martin Luther King Jr. onto national consciousness. A ‘national jobs program’ is at the top of the list of the core issues driving the Daily Campaign.
The march and rally will also spotlight the emergence of a coalition in support of the Daily Campaign. Since its formal outreach to other organizations and leaders just weeks ago, over a dozen organizations have endorsed the action and vowed to get more involved including the Newark and Irvington branches of the NAACP, Metropolitan Baptist Church, Muhammad’s Mosque No. 25, the New Black Panther Party’s Newark chapter, Enough Is Enough, the Street Warriors, NJ Black Issues Convention, NJ Labor Against The War, NJ Peace Action, NJ State Industrial Union Council, the Coalition To Save Our Homes, the Central Jersey Coalition Against Endless War, Black Administrators, Faculty and Staff Association @ SHU and the Solidarity Singers of the NJ Industrial Union Council.
“It’s one thing to get people to honk their horns and express approval for what we’re doing sentimentally. It’s something else to get them involved and participating in the historical moment,” said POP chairman Lawrence Hamm, describing this new phase of the Daily Campaign.
“Now is the time to get them involved,” he finished.
Monday through Friday, the Daily Campaign takes place from 4:30-6pm at the Lincoln Monument, Springfield Av. and West Market Street. Saturdays, the Daily Campaign takes place on Broad and Market Streets, downtown Newark from 12 noon to 2pm. On Sundays, the Daily Campaign returns to the Lincoln Monument from 2-3pm. Monday’s march and rally will replace the normal 4:30-6pm action for that day only!
The People’s Organization for Progress meets every Thursday at Abyssinian Baptist Church, 224 West Kinney Street, Newark at 6:30pm.
