Dear Ms. Rouse,
Re: UN vote for Palestinian Statehood
We, as Caribbean people and citizens of Grenada are concerned that the Grenada Government is wavering in its support for full Statehood for the Palestinian people. We are aware of the lobbying of the Jewish community in inviting ministers of the Grenadian Government to visit Israel at this sensitive time and are appalled at this type of lobbying of our ministers of government.
We are concerned that the US government is yet again applying diplomatic and other pressure on smaller nations to abstain from voting on this issue of Statehood for the Palestinians. We are encouraged by the statements of the Prime Minister in his support for the people of South Sudan and hope he will extend this support to the Palestinian peoples.
It is not enough to call for yet more talks in what is a discourse of unequals that has produced little relief for the Palestinians after generations of ‘peace agreements’ and talks. Meaningful dialogue can only take place as equals this is why we urge you to support the Palestinian people in their call for recognition as a State.
We write to ask that the Grenadian government support the Palestinian People’s legitimate right to sovereignty and self determination. It would be a tragedy If Grenada sided with injustice and abstained under US pressure.
Two thirds of the globe has already recognised Palestinian statehood and to vote against or to abstain in this matter would be an endorsement of colonialism and oppression.
Further, this would make Grenada complicit in the killings of innocent women and children by Israel forces in the West Bank and Gaza. History will not forgive us if we do not support the Palestinian People in their hour of need.
Yours sincerely,
President CLS
