Chicago-Midwest
Dr. Margaret Burroughs was one of the first to recognize me a youth leader, and I was glad to be one of the first to sign her petition for a commemorative stamp. Please join me and others in circulating this petition across the country in celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Margaret Burroughs, co founder of the historic Dusable Museum of African American History.

From: Citizens for Margaret Burroughs Stamp Committee

We the undersigned, respectfully request that the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee approve a Margaret Burroughs Commemorative Stamp to celebrate the life, talent, and accomplishments of artist/educator/historian Margaret Burroughs.

Margaret Taylor-Burroughs (November 11, 1917 – November 21, 2010) was a prominent African-American artist and writer and a co-founder of the DuSable Museum of African American History. She also helped to establish the South Side Community Art Center, whose opening on May 1, 1941 [was dedicated by the First Lady of the United States Eleanor Roosevelt. There at the age of 23 she served as the youngest member of its board of directors. Dr. Burroughs was a prolific writer, with her efforts directed toward the exploration of the Black experience and to children, especially to their appreciation of their cultural identity and to their introduction and growing awareness of art.

This petition stands the test of time and is consistent with public opinion and broad National and International interest, and features an American related subject.

Various Political interests in Government are being contacted to support our interest and cause, and to see the projects implementation and completion. By signing this petition I demonstrate my support of the Margaret Burroughs Commemorative Stamp and express my willingness to allow Citizens for Margaret Burroughs Stamp Committee. to use my Name and the information provided by me in furtherance of their efforts to secure a United States Postal Service Commemorative Stamp Honoring Dr. Margaret Burroughs.
Sincerely,
