While some Diplomats attended an assortment of meetings on the sidelines of the 67th Session of the General Assembly and pick up souvenirs to bring back home, His Excellency, President Obiang of Equatorial Guinea carried a bulk supply of rosaries for Cathedral Malabo that a New Yorker was unable to deliver this summer.

Victor Mooney, executive director, of US based South African Arts International was overjoyed with emotion when the Equatorial Guinea Mission to the United Nations informed him that the President has received your items recently.

“For a head of state to honor our request speaks volumes about this country and his Horizon 2020 development plan”, said Victor Mooney on Sunday at his home in Queens.

The dedication of a new Catholic cathedral in the city of Mongomo, Equatorial Guinea, served as a symbol of the nation’s economic development and the vigorous religious life of a country where the church was once violently suppressed.

President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo dedicated the new Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Equatorial Guinea’s easternmost city. In his remarks, he reminded his countrymen of his government’s efforts to restore religious freedom as one of its first acts upon assuming power.

The previous regime had forced the “closure of churches and persecution of Christians, many of whom were forced into exile,” President Obiang said. “With our arrival, we proceeded to reopen all the churches closed by the former regime. We proceeded to release [political] prisoners, and ecclesiastical activity regained its vigor and normality.”

Mr. Mooney will soon arrive in Equatorial Guinea before he rows the “Spirit of Malabo” from Las Palmas, Canary Islands to New York for an AIDS-free generation.

“Thanks to Rosetta Stone (a language learning software company), one of seventy corporate supporters for Goree Challenge IV, I’ll be able to share the gospel of Jesus Christ to my brothers and sisters in Spanish,” said Mooney. “I promised the Holy Father (now the Blessed John Paul), that I would evangelize at every opportunity bestowed upon me,” Mooney added.

In 2004, the Pontiff blessed the New Yorker inside the Vatican on World AIDS Day for his mission.
