Pioneer Turns Over Reins of Afrocentric Business

CULTURAL PIONEER TO TURN OVER THE REINS OF AFROCENTRIC BUSINESS, AKENTE EXPRESS, TO PURSUE CONTINENTAL INVITATIONS

Ron Springer wrapped in the Liberation flag.

(BlackNews.com) -- When Ron Springer came to Colorado on an Adams State College Basketball Scholarship, he had no idea that he would end up being a cultural icon to Denver's black community. In 1990, with $800 he launched Akente Express, a business that would grow to be the largest African Shopping Center in the Rocky Mountain Region. After two decades, Ron has started his exit strategy.

Springer was inspired to get into his business by the afrocentric movement that began 25 years ago in his home of New York City. "I did the groundwork and knew that with the dryness of Colorado's air, the response to the natural hair & skin care products, would go well," says Springer. "Then, I looked to the leaders in the industry such as Carols Daughter, Nubian Heritage and so on." Akente Express is known for its imported African fabrics, fragrance oils, incense, jewelry, authentic African artifacts, African American collectibles and hard to find products. He has supported the finest crafts and raw goods from every country on the continent of Africa.

In his 20 years, Ron has served the spectrum of Denver's black community, by sponsoring and participating with social events, civic and community based organizations, all of Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Company productions, African interior designs, Kwanzaa celebrations, theatrical productions, elementary to college graduations and more. "Ron will be missed, " says Sheryl Renee, former tenant "Generations of people come to Akente Express not only for the wares, but to be educated about African Culture. Many come to just connect with Ron, who is always attentive and interesting! A true friend."

Akente Express, is housed in a 120 year old four-plex, in lower downtown Denver, which will receive historical designation in 2012. The building has been black owned and operated since the early 70's, and in that time, has always been an incubator for entrepreneurs. For decades it was home to the Hue-Man Experience, the largest African American Bookstore, in the USA. Ron plans to continue the legacy by making the transition smooth, once the business is sold. He will remain as a consultant to the new owner for 18 months. "Leaving it in the proper hands is most important, because Colorado needs an Akente Express," says Springer. He is selling the remaining three units, as live/work retail condos.

As for the Harlem native, Ron plans to retire, and spend a year on a first time visit to the continent of Africa. He plans to accept the numerous invitations he's received from those African traders and villages, that he has supported for the past 20 years...and play a great game of chess.
