Introductory Kiswahili Course Description

Class begins Saturday August 27th at 9AM-10:30AM EST

Course Description
Introductory Kiswahili is an eight week course where you will learn the essentials to function in a Kiswahili-speaking environment within an East Afrikan cultural context. You will learn greetings, introductions and basic conversational skills. You will learn pronunciation, sentence structure, regular verb tenses and noun classes. Cultural lessons are part of language learning and you will learn how to count and tell time, how the family and community are structured, how to address different people, proverbs and the names of important food, places, items etc... Learning activities are appropriate for all ages and will include listening, speaking, singing, reading, role-playing, writing and games. You will be expected to reinforce learning between classes by completing homework assignments and by learning and using vocabulary words. A practical assessment of acquired skills concludes the course.

Course Materials
Access to downloadable/streamed files containing entire lessons with notes, exercises, assignments and multimedia learning activities in addition to a list of supplementary learning resources will be made available.

Introductory Kiswahili Course Syllabus

Course Topics Outline

Somo la kwanza: matamshi (pronounciation) of vowels, digraphs and syllables, greetings
Somo la pili: Kujitambulisha (introductions), numbers, more greetings, syntax
Somo la tatu: Family members, days of the week, months, years, at home, nouns and verbs
Somo la nne: Community members, time, in the community, verb tenses and conversation
Somo la tano: City life, directions, asking questions, adjectives
Somo la sita: Village life, events and customs, parts of the body, food, noun classes
Somo la saba: Proverbs, music, clothing, animals, colours, more sentence structures
Somo la nane: Review, practical assignment/project due date and assessment

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction – lesson review
2. Overview – outline learning objectives
3. Lesson - using listening, speaking, reading and other activities
4. Introduce new vocabulary
5. Exercises and practice
6. Recap the day’s lesson and assign week’s homework.


Lesson Components (presented in any order)

* Mazungumzo (dialogue) i.e using the language
* Mazoezi (exercises), i.e reciting numbers, place names/locations, etc…
* Zoezi la kusikia na kuelewa (listening and comprehension exercises)
* Zoezi la kusoma na kuandika (reading and writing exercises)
* Habari za utamaduni (cultural notes) i.e. the Kiswahili speaking worldview and customs
* Habari za sarufi (grammar notes)
* Zoezi la nyumbani (homework)
* Msamiati (vocabulary)
