On Saturday, March 10th, the anniversary of the immortal Harriet Tubman, the New Black Panther Party will rally ‘In Defense of Assata,’ protesting the new effort by the NJ Attorney General to have the $1 million dollar bounty on exiled Black Panther Assata Shakur raised to $5million!
The rally will take place at 12 noon on Broad and Market Streets in Newark.
“We are pathetically living in era where the US government’s foreign policy is crippling the world with its doctrine of ‘Regime Change,’” explained an angry Zayid Muhammad, a longtime friend and supporter of Shakur.
“This new attack is highly provocative and is not only a renewed threat on Assata’s life, it could be a real, election year opportunitic, threat to the national sovereignty of Cuba.”
The rally will also support calls for the release of Assata’s co-defendant Sundiata Acoli and for the release of the Cuban 5, Cuban nationals who exposed a U.S. based terrorist plot to attack the island only to have the FBI turn around and charge them with conspiracy related charges.
The rally will also condemn current efforts to criminalize the antiwar and immigrants rights work of legendary organizer Carlos Montes. Montes is a founder of the Brown Berets, the Chicano response to the Black Panther Party. His recent anti-war and immigrant rights organizing efforts led to him being targeted by the FBI.
The rally will takes place as apart of the Daily Peoples Protest Campaign for Jobs, Peace, Equality and Justice, initiated by the People’s Organization for Progress. The Daily Campaign is gearing up for a major jobs march and mobilization on April 4th, the anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
