Chicago-Midwest

Mubarak Inter-prizes along with Veterans Day remembers brother Milton L. Olive. U.S. Army, private first class, who was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism--at the cost of his own life--above and beyond the call of duty, on this day.

On October 22, 1965, Olive, a member of Company B, 2d Battalion (Airborne), and his platoon were pinned under heavy enemy gunfire when he noticed a grenade thrown into their midst. Olive grabbed the grenade and fell on it to absorb the blast, saving the lives of his fellow soldiers. Born near Ebenezer, MI, Olive was raised in Chicago.

He was later commemorated in 1970 when the city formed Olive-Harvey College. The educational facility was named for Olive and Carmel B. Harvey, an infantryman, also awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously.

The city continues to honor Olive in name with a lakeside park and a portion of the McCormick Place Convention Center.
