"God bless the life and legacy of our National Black Wall Street Chicago member, Chair of The Save The Rosenwald Coalition, 47th Street Black Wall Street Chicago District Chair, National Black Wall Street USA member and legendary activist Bobbie Johnson who made her transition Friday !! I will forever be humbled by Bobbie making the decision to make me probably of the last of her community activist partners she summoned to her apartment and gave some specific orders to before she went to make her transition process with her family. She made sure that we shared the same office space on 47th Street as we shared the same vision for the Black grassroots community and business involvement in the rebuilding of The Rosenwald and 47th Street in particular and Bronzeville in general. I do not take this lightly and PROMISE NOT to let her down and neither will all those she shared her vision with, especially in her last days!!" (Mark S. Allen, veteran activist, Chair of National Black Wall Street Chicago and chief of staff to Rev. Michael Carter, National President of National Black Wall Street USA)
Statement by activist Dee Evans
Bronzeville lost a dedicated grassroots community activist with the death of Bobbie Johnson, RN. Bobbie was the founder of the Save the Rosenwald Coalition and creator of many programs, including the Art Zone Literacy Program for Youth. In her efforts to give back to the community, Bobbie was a visionary, constantly busy, constantly weaving new dreams and developing plans focusing on the preservation and redevelopment of the Michigan Boulevard Garden (Rosenwald) Apartments, and the East 47th Street corridor. When Mac and I spoke to her recently, she was outlining those plans to 2016 and the niches that she saw us and others filling. When Bobbie spoke, you saw the pictures that she created: the families once again occupying the apartments, the stores bustling with customers and providing jobs for the community, the recognition of the musical heritage of the area, and the children playing in a safe environment. We are so sorry that she did not live to see the dreams fulfilled. Our thoughts are with her family and the community for their loss. Bobbie will be missed.
