On Wednesday, September 14th at 11am, Philadelphia independent mayoral candidate Diop Olugbala will hold a press conference to announce his Commission on Public Safety, a component of his mayoral campaign that will directly address the issues currently facing this city in terms of policing the community.

At the press conference, Olugbala will expose the objective relationship the police department has with the people, particularly the clearly racially driven dynamics of police brutality and corruption in the community, as well as call for a community controlled police commission, with subpoena power and investigation power as well as power to hire and fire police administration and officers.

The conference will include statements from: Melonie Hurling - mother of Melissa Hurling, who was assaulted by police in the Parkside neighborhood; a family member of Askia Sabur, who was beated in September 2010 by Philadelphia police; a family member of Denill Giddings, victim of murder by the Philadelphia police; Sharon Williams, mother of Kwende Williams, who was shot by Philadelphia police in early 2011; Attorney Leon Williams, former candidate for District Attorney in Philadelphia; and other family members of victims of police murder and brutality in this city.
