Bank of America and Fannie Mae / Freddie Mac have played the biggest roles in violating the human right to housing and driving cities like Chicago and Detroit further into debt.

Since the start of the housing crisis, millions of people have been foreclosed on and evicted since the start of the housing crisis. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac invested in most of these mortgages, but unlike the banks that trashed the economy, these government-sponsored mortgage investors won't reduce principal to help struggling families or donate vacant properties to non-profit organizations. Instead, Fannie and Freddie continue to gamble on the toxic mortgages whose failure led to their being bailed out by the federal government in 2008.

As a mortgage servicer and bank, Bank of America is one of the biggest foreclosurers in Chicago and across the country. Former employees recently revealed that it is company policy to pay bonuses to foreclosure assistance specialists who lie to homeowners and deny loan modifications. Pushing thousands of families is not a severe violation of the human right to housing, but also leads to more vacant properties in already hard hit neighborhoods.

Bank of America has also swindled Chicago, Detroit, and other cities across the country with toxic loans that seemed like a sound investment but has driven cities and school boards further into debt, serving as a justification for layoffs, budget cuts, and the planned closure of fifty public schools in Chicago alone.
