The Committee to Honor Puerto Rican Women on International Working Women’s Day, once again will host their annual event Celebrating Puerto Rican Woman: Today, Tomorrow and Always, at Casabe Houses at 150 East 121st Street on March 10th from 4-8pm.

“I am pleased and proud to be part of such an effort to honor these extraordinary Puerto Rican women” said, Lillian Jimenez of The Committee.  “It is important for us to honor leaders who make such significant contributions to our community.”

This year the Committee will honor the late Alice Cardona (1930-2011) for her enduring advocacy for women’s rights and bilingual education as well as her founding of various Latina organizations. Yolanda Sanchez will be honored for her fervent defense of Puerto Rican empowerment in New York City as well as her work in foster care, housing, with youth and, the aging.  Melinda Gonzalez will be honored for her steadfast commitment to bring the Afro-Puerto Rican art form of Bomba and leadership development to young people and audiences throughout NYC.

The three honorees will receive the “Adelfa Vera Award” recognizing the late Dona Vera’s commitment to awaken the Puerto Rican people to a future of freedom and social justice.

Our cultural program will feature female performers including poets Sandra Maria Esteves and Mariposa.  The event will also host an all women’s musical group, artisans and vendors.

International Working Women's Day (March 8th), a Socialist political event celebrated by women's organizations, the global labor movement and progressive countries around the world.  A day we pay homage to the tremendous contributions that women workers have made in the fight for a just society. A day we reaffirm women’s place of honour at the head of our families, communities and movements.  More than anything else, it is a day that all workers, whatever their gender, colour, or creed, remind those who seek to divide us that we know that our struggle, our enemy, and our goal, is one and the same.

Sponsors:  Casabe Houses, Virtual Boricua, La Reina del Barrio Productions, ProLibertad, Circa 95, CemiUnderground and the Latino Educational Media Center.
