Indigenous Knowledge the Way to Go

3828871397?profile=originalBy Caven Masuku \ THE entire world is in chaos because of the lack of knowledge that can be taped from elders to solve health problems.

Indigenous knowledge an approach to apply in everyday life can be defined as an understanding, skills, and philosophies that emanate from society through interacts with natural surroundings.

Indigenous knowledge is losing grip in Africa yet most of the health challenges faced can be solved by interacting with biodiversity. Biodiversity should be embedded with the well being of people and of planet earth across the globe.

Human beings global, regional and local need to merge the cultural traits with local culture, language, social interactions, skills, spirituality and rituals to initiate ways to solve their health challenges like hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cerebral, cancer, diabetes, hemorrhoids, and many others.

Human beings need to interact with the environment for pragmatic sustainability in addressing health challenges that cost us life and millions if not billions of dollars.

In Zimbabwe and many other parts of the world, people should continuously communicate with the biological components of the environment in fascinating complex sets of knowledge and practices to gain wisdom.

There are synergies that cannot be ignored through science and indigenous knowledge that can build philosophical thinking towards elevating an individual's knowledge.

The challenges faced by people are that they no longer tape knowledge from their elders and prefer scientific approach medicines that have side effects if consumed excessively.

Communities across the globe should network with their elders and tape knowledge on some of the herbs that can heal the most dangerous diseases that become the leading cause of death like cancer. Procedures and approaches that are locally generated from community members can boost Indigenous Knowledge Systems.

In an interview conducted with 5 elders from the community who preferred anonymity said that "Africa is a rich continent that if researcher can tape knowledge from their elders can address most of the health problems that have no effects and are natural such as prickly pear (dhorofiya), Aloe vera, maize chives, avocado pear, Umsukuzwan/Zumbani and so forth".

"Prickly pear a shrub that can be found in most parts of the world (Dhorofiya) leaves or peel can be used for hemorrhoids, Aloe vera (Inhlaba/Gava Kawa can be used for constipation, kidneys failure, headaches, and wounds", they added.

"Most people succumb to the leading cause of death disease like cancer yet maize chives if chopped can help to prevent cancer and kidney failure", said a 66-year-old man Skhumbuzo Gumede. He added that most men resort to Vuka-vuka medicine yet the pulp of an avocado pear is a natural aphrodisiac.

There is a need to co-opt elders and document their knowledge to preserve indigenous knowledge. More academic research through networks with experts to support indigenous knowledge production should be initiated.
