Gender Issues: Do men have a gender?

What gender do men belong to? Do men have a gender?

GENDER ISSUES: It seems to me that 'gender' has become a synonym for women.

Any discussion that includes the word gender is a a discussion of issues and concerns of women.

What issues are there that are the concerns of women that does not concern men?

So wouldn't it be more appropriate to talk about "Women's Issues" and "Men's Issues" because not everyone is involved in a family.   For all of the "gender" issues that were discussed in the recent election cycle, I gave my two cents because they directly impacted my wife's quality of life, her earning power, etc.  And what affects her, affects the rest of us.  But there are many single and divorced women who are on their own, so these issues affect them as women.  Having access to contraception and the right to have an abortion are issues that concern women.  While a family may also suffer from the wife and mother not getting the pay she deserves, it still doesn't negate the fact that there are many single women who could be paid less and men wouldn't be affected by that one bit.  It also doesn't speak to the fact that men are not complaining about not getting equal pay because they get paid more than women.  There are global issues that affect both genders, but I found it funny that when it came to the "gender" issue of contraception, Congress only found it appropriate to discuss the issue with men.  They ignored the female perspective.

The problem with this is false equivalency.  This is like saying that Whites and Blacks have concerns that impact them equally when it is clear that it is not the case, both statisically, culturally, and historically.  Don't let the media's need to dumb down and shorthand everything distract from the fact that women and men have issues of common concern, but they also have issues exclusive to each gender.  If you have a men's issue you want to draw attention, do so, and then the media will have to come up with a dumbed-down or shorthand descriptive to quantify the global and unique issues and circumstances that you face.

  • greetings,

man oh man! this gender issue shit is just another way to get non-europeeings to accept white psycho-sexual dysfunctionalism, which goes hand in glove with white global domination and the animalistic-pathological culture it projects as civilization. as far as i'm concerned black people and the other melaninated groups that have been bombarded by such barbarity must make real attempts at preserving what's left of their moral sanity, what our ancestors in ancient kemet referred to as maat. and the sky's the limit!

    UHURU!

    • In my opinion this is not a black and white issue or concern - nothing to do with race.
The this a conversation about how we value each other regardless of race, creed etc.
It is my opinion that those issues that seems to be the the specific concern of women; for example, equal pay for equal work, domestic violence, abortion..., concerns and impacts all of us regardless of gender and even race.
Discussions of these issues and concern, I believe, should not be gender specific.
This also has nothing to do with our ancestors. Our ancestors lived the life they lived. It's time for us live our life being responsible for our own circumstances.
There is nothing new to accomplish and new trail to blaze when we continue to walk in the footsteps of our ancestors for the sake of walking in their footstep

According to Merriam Webster's, "gender" is defined as either "SEX" or "the behaviorial, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex." So, yeah...men have a gender. The "gender gap" is code for women's issues in political discourse, and rightfully so, especially when you consider that they don't get equal pay for equal work for no other reason than men feel like they can pay them less for the same work.

    • Thanks for engaging in this conversation.

If it were simple as using a dictionary defination there'd be no need for this commentary.

It is a given that gender include male and female.
However, social and political conversations concerning gender assign gender exclusively to the female (so it seems).

As a human being, that women do not recieve "equal pay for equal work" impacts me and all genders with in a family.
Equal pay for equal work is not a concern exclusive to women - it is a concern that impacts everyone.
