Be part of a rare opportunity to meet some of America’s most controversial activists— Aaron Dixon and Valentine Hobbs of the Black Panther Party—on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. Sometimes referred to as “Enemies of the State,” the former Panther’s members will discuss their organization’s involvement in Seattle. A question and answer session will follow.
The BPP was a revolutionary African-American political organization founded in 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, California. Originally, BPP’s purpose was to protect African Americans from police brutality. Eventually, the organization developed a newspaper and a vast array of social programs.
Aaron Dixon served as the Defense Captain of the Seattle Black Panther Party, the first chapter outside of California. After his departure from the Panthers in 1977, Dixon worked as a drug and alcohol counselor and a gang youth counselor for 15 years. In 2002, he founded Central House, a non-profit providing transitional housing for young adults.
Valentine Hobbs joined the Black Panther Party in 1969. He helped form the Sidney Miller Free Medical Clinic that included testing for sickle cell anemia and tuberculosis in Seattle, Washington. Hobbs’ work history includes the Washington DC Fire Department (EMT), Department of Corrections in Washington DC, and a juvenile transitional housing program.
