DR. UMAR JOHNSON LECTURES NEWPORT NEWS

RECEPTION AFTERWARDS AT UBUS BOOKS & THINGS PLUS

By Nadirah and H. K. Khalifah

December 17, 2011

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Saturday December 17 was vintage 1996 when UBUS Books & Things, in Hampton, Virginia was a touchstone for Black Culture, Political, Health, Education as well as a business expression. Saturday was essentially the introduction of Part Two: The Best of the former was on full display as Dr. Umar Abdullah Johnson was warmly received at a reception at the New UBUS Books Plus, retaill complex.

UBUS Books Plus is located at 2005 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, rather than Hampton, as was the original “Books & Things,” but that may have been the only fact that distinguished the two - At the least for one day.

FULL HOUSE AND LIBRARY & THE BOOKSTORE RECEPTION

The full house at the N. N. Main Street Library followed the Owner of the former store to the New Store. The Managing Partner of the New UBUS BOOKS & THINGS is Terrance Moore-EL. He and his wife and staff received the caravan like honored royalty: delicious, wholesome food for the body, washed down with Coconut water.

The “food for the mind” was equally delecteous: that was the some 1,000 books on display in the spacious store that were “written by, for or about Black people.

Healthy foods advocate, MAAT-Ra & Dr. Umar Johnson mingled freely amongst the adoring standing room on crowd, a good mixture of local residents, as well as folk who’d come as far aways as Charlotte, N.C. and Washington, D. C. to hear, touch and feel the latest, hottest, and many feel the great, young Scholar in America today

Both Guest Speakers did a masterful job of educating the crowd about good physical health (MAAT); and a combination of the two by Dr. Johnson.

The Lecture was sponsored by a former basketball star in Newport News Public Schools: Sister Karen, who was given opened support by her two Sisters. And Terrance Moore-EL

The overflowing audience at both places included one of the legends in the area, Sister Opal Bilal, a multi-talented personality in her own right; in addition she was the founding News Reporter and assistant for The Newport News, a newspaper founded by H. Khalif Khalifah as he settled in to the Tidewater area 1978-2000. One of Khalifah’s best friends, Nathaniel Bracey and his youngest daughter Nadirah, with Grandson Heru were present. Long before Widower Khalifah singled parented three of his daughters, Nathaniel Bracey was an example that it could be done; his daughter Khadijah Bracey was a student at Harambee Home school, a wholly owned, one room concept school of UBUS COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS, the business parent of it all.
