Santo Domingo.- The government on Thursday announced a call for tenders for radios, ambulance, surveillance cameras and systems to identify and locate first response vehicles, among other equipment, to start operating an integrated emergency system, including 911 calls.

The President’s Commission for Emergency and Security Systems met at the National Palace to advance the work by the agencies that form it, and affirmed having already begun to recruit and evaluate the system’s management.

It said the U.S. government will donate the technology platform needed to operate the call center and dispatch first responders.

President Danilo Medina had stated that the 911 system is a priority, said Presidency chief of staff Gustavo Montalvo. “We’re working hard so in December, as President Medina pledged, the Integrated Emergency and Safety System (911) starts operations."

Once the system is launched, first response to emergencies will operate under the number 911, to provide effective and coordinated assistance 24-7. "Once a citizen dials 9-1-1 and reports their emergency, they'll receive the corresponding agency's response within five minutes, free of charge."
